The game doesn’t assume that you have seen the movie either.īeauty and the Beast has us take on the role of the Beast, who can jump, claw at enemies, and do an awkward billowing roar that usually moves platforms the Beast is standing on. The story is told in cutscenes between each stage through stained-glass art, which I liked, and text at the bottom of the screen. I’d recommend playing or watching today for speedrunning (I’ve watched it on AGDQ and it’s a fun one), but probably not worth going back to play otherwise. General Comments: Aladdin is a decent platforming experience that is over with quickly. I wanted Aladdin’s jumps to be more fluid.īoss fight(s) with Jafar are fun and not too hard. I didn’t figure out how to glide in the first 10 minutes, which made things feel really slow. Only hardware lag I had to deal with was on the last boss. It would have been nice if she was a playable character. They didn’t talk about Jasmine much for some reason. This is most likely due to the slew of bad titles I’ve been slogging through recently. I liked it, and this was my first playthrough in 2019. Too many games to play though, gotta keep trucking. I almost wanted to play again to collect all the stuff and see what happens. Minus points for making Aladdin be Mario. Points for the magic carpet stages and glide mechanic. Not too big a deal though.Īladdin could have used a few more abilities, or maybe a usable item other than the apple toss.Ī few traces of pinpoint jumps, but most of them are alleviated by gliding. The faces of characters in cutscenes were…. I was impressed with both the backdrops and cutscenes. The music just isn’t quite the same, but it’s still good. Aladdin has a great soundtrack, but the SNES rendition loses a bit of what makes it great in converting to chiptune. It might also be that the only way he can do damage is to plop on enemies’ heads like Mario.Įvery stage’s background music matches its location in the movie. It might be that Aladdin himself feels slow and movements aren’t fluid. With all this being said, Aladdin is missing something. I’m not sure what either of these do since I never succeeded in getting all of them, but I’m sure it’s something interesting. Lots of collectibles to be had in each stage, including about 10 red jewels and a fancy bug that pops out of a chest which you have to wrangle down. There are short stages within each act, usually making up 3-5 side-scrollers before the boss fight. I say it’s mostly a platformer because there are some magic carpet stages that reflect shmups. You can jump, throw apples at enemies to daze them, and glide with a piece of cloth by holding the R button midair. There are cutscenes that are framed inside the magic carpet that lead into each act.Īladdin is… mostly a platformer. It almost follows the movie, except that Abu falls into a pyramid in the desert at some point and you have to rescue him. I appreciate that Aladdin takes the time between each stage to tell the story. Level 7: Aladdin, Jasmine, Abu, the Special Endingįinish the game with at least 70 red gems, and you'll get to see the Special Ending.Donkey Kong Country 2 – Diddy’s Kong Questĭonkey Kong Country 3 – Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!
